Tuesday 14th of June, the very first World's Tapa's Day (Día Mundial de la Tapa) was announced in Korea! The event took place at the Spanish Ambassador¢¥s residence at 3PM. This announcement precedes the actual World¢¥s Tapa¢¥s Day, which it will be on June the 16th. During this event, the guests had the opportunity to taste Moritz beer and tapas from some of the best Spanish restaurants in Seoul: Alma Foods, Spain Club, Sobremesa and Terreno. In addition, the Spanish restaurants will offer its tapas during the week after, as a special promotion that was also announced on that day.
The event was organized by the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Seoul and sponsored by Barcelona's finest beer: Moritz. The goal was to contribute to make the event worldwide known so that people all over the world can get a better taste of the Spanish Gastronomy. As mentioned before, four top Spanish restaurants of Seoul participated in this special occasion: Alma Foods, Spain Club, Sobremesa and Terreno. A contest was conducted among the participants, were the journalists attending were in charge of selecting the best tapa among the presented ones. The winner restaurant, Sobremesa, received a diploma signed by the Spanish Ambassador recognizing being the maker of the best tapa of the First World Tapa Day in Korea!
The tapa is a hallmark of the Spanish gastronomy. It has a unique preparation, in small and varied portions. It is consumed nationwide and it is very popular because it is usually eaten standing up, in groups and sharing the same dish, a way of consuming it that promotes positive values like sharing, fun and lifestyle. The tapa is miniaturized cuisine, which has attracted the attention of Spain's most laureate and innovative chefs.
The sponsor of the event was Moritz Company, a beer brand with more than 150 years of history and one of the symbols of Barcelona¢¥s gastronomy and culture. Moritz is a high quality beer with a soft and sweet flavor entirely made with mineral water from the Font d¢¥Or springs of Montseny, a natural park located in Catalonia.
The World Tapas Day is a worldwide event celebrated since the year 2010, when the first Día Mundial de la Tapa (DMT) took place in 40 Spanish cities. That same year Turespaña led the first international edition of the World Tapas Day in 17 countries. 127 actions of communication, presentations and tastings of tapas were performed with the collaboration of 292 restaurants. By the year 2015, more than 40 Spanish cities took part in the event, where different tapas tours were organized. The main novelty for 2016 is that the World Tapas Day will be also held in Korea for the very first time!
